Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement (MHHS)

The way that electricity is being measured is changing across the United Kingdom. Here's everything you need to know.

Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) is changing the way electricity is measured across the United Kingdom.

For most businesses, the transition will happen in the background with little or no disruption.

Here's everything you need to know about MHHS, how it affects your business and what to expect over the coming months.

What is MHHS?

Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) is an industry-wide programme led by Ofgem and delivered by Elexon.

It changes how electricity usage is measured and settled by moving away from industry estimates and towards actual usage data collected every 30 minutes.

This gives suppliers and the wider energy industry a much clearer picture of when electricity is being used, helping to create a smarter and more efficient energy system.

Why is MHHS Being Introduced?

The UK's energy system has changed significantly over the last 20 years. With the growth of renewable energy, smart technology and flexible energy solutions, the current settlement process no longer reflects how electricity is used today.

MHHS will provide a range of benefits including:

  • Improve billing accuracy by using actual electricity usage data instead of industry estimates.
  • Reduce reliance on estimated usage giving suppliers a clearer picture of when electricity is being consumed.
  • Support renewable energy generation making it easier to match energy demand with renewable supply.
  • Improve forecasting across the electricity market helping suppliers buy energy more accurately and efficiently.
  • Encourage energy flexibility by allowing the introduction of smarter tariffs.
  • Support the UK's Net Zero ambitions to help create a cleaner, more sustainable and more transparent energy system.

What Does This Mean for Your Business?

For most businesses, very little will change day to day.

Your electricity supply will remain the same and your existing contract will continue as normal without disruption.

The biggest changes will happen behind the scenes, helping create a more modern and efficient electricity market.

How Will I Know When I've Been Migrated?

The move to MHHS will happen behind the scenes and will not interrupt your electricity supply.

Migrations for Valda Energy customers will occur between 8 October and 7 May 2027. To make the process as simple as possible, Valda Energy will contact customers with an AMR or SMETS smart meter by email 2 weeks before your supply is due to be migrated to MHHS.

This communication will explain:

  • When your migration is scheduled to take place.
  • Whether any action is required from you.
  • Any changes you may notice on your account or bill.
  • Where to find additional support and guidance.

For most customers, no action will be needed, and your migration will happen automatically.

What Will Change After Migration?

Most customers will not notice any immediate changes to their day-to-day energy supply. However, you may see:

  • Updates to the MPAN information shown on your electricity bill.
  • New industry terminology relating to MHHS.
  • More accurate energy billing by using actual half-hourly consumption data instead of industry estimates wherever possible.
  • Future access to smarter products and services designed around your energy usage.

What impact does MMHS on my meter type?

If your business has a SMETS smart meter, you're already well placed to benefit from MHHS.

Smart meters automatically send readings and can provide detailed half-hourly consumption data, helping improve accuracy and visibility of energy use.

A Half-Hourly (HH) meter records electricity usage every 30 minutes and is already commonly used by larger businesses and higher-energy users.

Most MHHS changes will happen behind the scenes, with no impact to your supply, contract, or day-to-day service. As part of the transition, you may see updates to market processes and changes to how MPAN information is displayed.

AMR meters automatically collect energy consumption data and support half-hourly settlement arrangements.

These meters will continue to support MHHS under the new Advanced market segment.

Traditional meters will still be included within MHHS.

However, businesses with smart meters will benefit from more detailed data and future tariff opportunities. For this reason, we recommend upgrading to a smart meter where possible. You can book your installation here.

MHHS Timeline

The MHHS programme is being introduced in phases across the energy industry, with key milestones leading up to full implementation. The timeline below highlights the major stages of the transition and what businesses can expect as the market moves towards a more accurate, flexible and data-driven electricity settlement system.

Do Valda Energy Customers Need to Do Anything?

For customers whose meter already records half-hourly data, no action is required.

MHHS is largely an industry-wide change taking place in the background, and your electricity supply will continue as normal.

If you have a traditional meter, there are a few things you can do to prepare:

MHHS FAQs

Yes. MHHS is a regulatory programme mandated by Ofgem and applies across the electricity market.

No. MHHS does not automatically change your current contract, agreed rates or contract end date.

No. MHHS is primarily a systems and data change and will not interrupt your electricity supply.

MHHS includes all meter types. However, a smart meter allows you to take advantage of more accurate usage data, improved energy insights and future smart tariff opportunities.

If your premises still has a traditional electricity meter, then we advise booking in a smart meter installation to ensure you fully benefit from MHHS.

Your electricity consumption is already recorded half-hourly, so most MHHS changes will take place behind the scenes.

You may notice some updates to technical information shown on your bill, such as MPAN details. Any significant changes will be communicated in advance.

Industry processes are in place to make supplier switching continue smoothly throughout the migration period.

No. MHHS only applies to electricity supplies.

MHHS supports the UK's Net Zero transition by providing the energy industry with far more accurate data on when electricity is consumed, enabling a smarter, more flexible energy system that can better integrate renewable generation and support a low-carbon future.
