The British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS) is a government initiative designed to help eligible manufacturers reduce electricity costs and improve competitiveness. Eligible businesses could benefit from savings of up to £40 p/MWh through exemptions from Capacity Market (CM) costs from 01 October 2027, and Renewables Obligation (RO) and Feed-in Tariff (FiT) costs from 01 April 2027.

In addition, eligible businesses will receive a one-off payment in 2027, intended to provide support equivalent to the period before the RO and FiT exemptions begin appearing on bills.

What is the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS)?

The British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme supports eligible manufacturers by exempting them from the indirect costs of:

  • Renewables Obligation (RO)
  • Feed-in Tariffs (FiT)
  • Capacity Market (CM)

The scheme is expected to support over 10,000 businesses across Great Britain, helping to reduce energy costs and strengthen UK manufacturing competitiveness.

To qualify, businesses must meet all the following criteria:

  • Be registered with Companies House
  • Operate within an eligible sector
  • Manufacture eligible products
  • Use at least 33 MWh of grid-supplied electricity per year at the manufacturing site

Businesses must meet all four criteria to be eligible. Applications that do not meet these requirements cannot proceed.
