With the end of the Energy Bill Relief Scheme, the government support for businesses has been greatly reduced. If this is affecting your business and cash flow please use the button below to fill out the form so we can talk you through ways in which Valda Energy can help.

Energy Bill Discount Scheme

The Energy Bill Relief Scheme (EBRS) has come to an end. The UK government has announced the Energy Bill Discount Scheme (EBDS) that will continue to support eligible businesses and public sector organisations.

As with the previous scheme, Valda Energy customers will not need to do anything as the discount will automatically be applied to bills.

Continued support on energy bills for eligible businesses

Valda Energy Energy Bill Discount Scheme
Energy Bill Discount Scheme
  • The new scheme has been created with the intention of continuing support for businesses over the next 12 months whilst limiting taxpayer’s exposure to volatile energy markets, with a cap set at £5.5 billion.
  • The EBDS will run for 12 months from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024.
  • You will not need to do anything as the discount will automatically be applied to eligible businesses' bills.
  • If you are eligible, Valda will contact you with the discount price that you will be receiving.
  • You should continue to pay your bills as normal until the discount is applied.
  • For more information, please visit the GOV.UK website.

Who is eligible for the Energy Bill Discount Scheme

The new scheme will be available to eligible customers on a non-domestic contract including:

  • Businesses.
  • Voluntary sector organisations, such as charities.
  • Public sector organisations such as schools, hospitals and care homes.

who are:

  • On existing fixed price contracts that were agreed on or after 1 December 2021.
  • Signing new fixed price contracts.
  • On deemed/out of contract or standard variable tariffs.
  • On flexible purchase or similar contracts.
  • On variable ‘Day Ahead Index’ (DAI) tariffs (Northern Ireland scheme only).

The level of support for each organisation will vary depending on the type and date of the contract. For example, customers who signed a new contract in February 2023 are eligible but will receive zero discount; this is because those customers are benefiting from lower wholesale prices and therefore better rates.

How the discount is applied

Eligible customers will receive a discount per unit on their energy bills during the 12-month period. This is subject to a maximum discount.

The threshold prices and maximum discounts have been set at the following:

  • Electricity: £19.61 per megawatt hour (MWh) with a threshold of £302.00 per MWh
  • Gas: £6.97 per megawatt hour (MWh) with a threshold of £107.00 per MWh

Discount rates are published by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero using wholesale prices and the price thresholds. The discount is only applicable to the wholesale element of the price. Valda will automatically apply the discount on monthly bills for all eligible customers who qualify for a discount.

As with EBRS, Valda Energy customers do not need to do anything as the discount will automatically be applied to bills.
